Travel Photography Tip – Photograph People Being Miserable

Here’s  an interesting travel photography tip next time you’re out; when all the tourists are smiling and loving where they are, photograph people being miserable.

This was in Greenwich Village on a beautiful Spring day.  It obviously happened in the past because as of today, April 6, 2014, it appears that we will never again see a beautiful Spring day.
But I digress.

Look at these two. OK, there are four but two of them aren’t real.  The wife is smiling as she reviews the photographs she’s been taking. She’s going to have fun and wonderful memories to share when they get back to Peoria (my generic term for Anywhere, USA).  He, on the other hand, is merely along for the ride, or so it seems. I love the contrast of her, “Isn’t this great!” expression against his, “Can we leave now?” look.
And it doesn’t hurt that this is all happening on a park bench with two, stone cold statues that are more engaged with each other than the actual humans are.

So next time, remember that your next great shot, try a little misery.

And as always, please help me keep this site alive by browsing through my ebooks or photo galleries of beautiful New York City black and white photography. There you can select a gorgeous high-resolution print file that you can download for only $20 and print it anywhere yourself.  And I’ll donate 20% of the purchase price to one of the global humanitarian charities that you can select on checkout.

Until next time, happy shooting.
