In stark contrast to the recommendation of my last post, this travel photography tip is to photograph the joy.
We’re still in Greenwich Village here and one of my favorite destinations there to photograph people is at the fountain on a warm day.
Invariably, the kids just MUST go in. It’s the urban equivalent of running through the sprinkler. OK, lots of you don’t know that that means. But if you were raised in the suburbs, you do.
I love this shot because it was shot under a dim, early evening light. The brightness of the water spray (helped a little with post processing) and the overall dark tones play with each other nicely.
You can see the architecture of the fountain and a little of the context of the surroundings. The streetlights are a nice touch too.
But the magic of the moment are the kids. Always the children. Screaming, jumping and just feeling the joy of playing in the fountain, without a care in the world.
Remember those times? Of course not. Life has beaten that kind of unbridled joy right out of us. But when we see them, we can remember. And we smile.
So next when you’re out there in a citified, urban environment, full of sophistication and architectural beauty, don’t forget to seek out photograph the joy.
And as always, please help me keep this site alive by browsing through my ebooks or photo galleries of beautiful New York City black and white photography. There you can select a gorgeous high-resolution print file that you can download for only $20 and print it anywhere yourself. And I’ll donate 20% of the purchase price to one of the global humanitarian charities that you can select on checkout.
Until next time, happy shooting.
