When pursuing travel photography, some of the most artistic photo opportunities are to photograph the art in architecture.
In this case, the art is not in the environmental context of the structure, but in the essence of its design.
Whether the architecture is modern glass and steel or neo-classical, I am always drawn to the patterns, textures and shapes.
This photo is the facade of the New York Post Office entrance on 9th Avenue and 34th Street. It encompasses a full New York City block in length.
What works here is the convergence and vanishing perspective and shapes of the base of the columns against the long lines and angles formed by the long front steps with their complementary vanishing perspective.Together, they make for a powerful composition.
Texture also plays a big part in this composition so be aware of it and make sure your photography technique will record detail in both shadows and highlights.
So next time you’re amazed by a beautiful piece of architecture, large or small, seek out the art contained in its design.
Happy shooting.
