Photographing Architecture – Grand Central Terminal

Here’s another example of architectural subject matter that is truly iconic in New York City. In this case, Grand Central Terminal. It is NOT Grand Central Station. It was named ‘terminal’ because it was the final (terminal) stop on the line. Just so you know.
In this case, I found that the main facade has all the Grand Central Terminaliness (yes, I made that word up too) you could want. It’s got the clock, the columns, heck it’s even labeled Grand Central Terminal.
So here I wanted to isolate those elements but add the sweeping convergence of an adjoining piece of architecture, the bridge. With a composition like this one, you get two massive architectural elements balanced together.  It’s also important to balance and contrast the complementary tonal elements of the two structures.

So  next time you’re faced with iconic architecture, find a friendly architectural neighbor to play with.

Happy shooting,

Bob Estremera
